The course.
Flat, fast and closed to the public for race day, the Fernleigh 15 is a 15km point-to-point along Newcastle's iconic rail trail from Adamstown to Belmont. Starting at the corner of Park Avenue and Bailey Street at the track's northern end, the course dives through the heritage-listed Fernleigh Tunnel in the opening kilometre, then follows the sealed former Belmont rail line through bushland and wetlands to finish beside Belmont TAFE on Alick Street. Gentle railway grades the whole way make it one of the region's best PB courses.
The event welcomes runners, walkers and wheelchair athletes, with an optional bus back to the start and a finisher's medal for everyone who crosses the line. Kids get their own race-day moment in the Fernleigh 1500, a 1500m dash at the Belmont finish precinct. Organised by H Events, the team behind Hill to Harbour and the Newcastle Marathon, the Fernleigh 15 draws thousands to the track each October — enter early, as late fees apply from two weeks out.
